About
Simon Aitchison is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Calgary, Alberta, inspired by metaphysics, nature, music and dream-like states. Highly inspired to paint from an unknown source within, the paintings produced are reflections of deep introspection and contemplative thoughts combined with the direct action of painting.
Simon's work spans painting, photography, and conceptual practice. His current work is best described as Abstract Expressionism, Abstract Realism and Surrealism.
The Stones Series — now at eleven completed works with a twelfth in progress — emerged from a singular painting that resonated with a deep connection to nature, where stones became a powerful subject for expression. Each canvas (primarily large-scale, 40″ × 60″ oil on canvas) is built through layers of deep thought and direct painting, each carrying its own theme and internal world.
In March 2026, Simon coined two new terms that have since defined a new phase of practice: Paintscape Photography™ (March 15, 2026) — a blended practice of painting and photography in which painted surfaces are explored as imagined landscapes — and OIRA™ (Organically Induced Recursive Art, March 20, 2026) — a recursive art system in which each work becomes the source material for the next transformation.
The Vitrification Series runs parallel — an evolution of the Stones Series toward something more fluid and intuitive, originating from the Cadavre Exquis chain at Theatre 1308 in Calgary. The concept: turning stone into glass. Applying energy to form, transforming structure into light.
Simon works from his studio in Calgary. He maintains full ownership and control of his practice — no third-party platforms, no intermediaries. Everything runs from his own sites.
