The Framework
Three original concepts define Simon Aitchison's practice and the mark that holds them together. Paintscape Photography™, OIRA™, and AiRT™ are not separate ideas — they are one interconnected system, documented and coined in 2026.
Concept 01
Coined by Simon Aitchison — March 2026
Paintscape Photography™ is an original art form coined by Simon Aitchison in March 2026. It is the practice of photographing the surface of oil paintings at close range — treating the texture, colour, and form of the paint itself as terrain to be explored and documented.
The result is a series of imagined landscapes: photographs that appear to show mountains, rivers, aerial views, and geological formations — yet every element in the image is paint. No landscape was visited. No terrain was photographed. The world in the image was built by hand, with oil on canvas, and then discovered through a lens.
Each Paintscape photograph is a unique image. The same painting, photographed at a different angle, in different light, at a different point on the surface, produces a completely different landscape. The source painting is not reproduced — it is explored.
"The surface of a painting is a landscape waiting to be discovered. The camera is the explorer."
The first Paintscape photographs were taken from the surface of Stones IX — Become. That single painting generated five distinct imagined landscapes, each one a unique discovery. These became the Imagined Lands series — the first body of Paintscape Photography™ work.
Concept 02
Organically Induced Recursive Art — Coined by Simon Aitchison — March 2026
OIRA™ — Organically Induced Recursive Art — is a creative framework coined by Simon Aitchison to describe a process that is recursive by nature. In a recursive creative process, the work does not end when an object is completed. The completed object becomes the starting point for the next act of creation.
The word organic is deliberate. The recursion is not planned or engineered. It arises naturally from the act of making — from looking closely at what has been made and finding new possibilities within it. The loop is not imposed on the work. It is discovered inside it.
"The artwork is not a single object. The artwork is the loop."
OIRA™ is the conceptual engine behind Paintscape Photography™. The painting generates the photograph. The photograph generates the print. The print may inspire a new painting. Each cycle produces work that could not have existed without the one before it.
OIRA™ stands for: Organically · Induced · Recursive · Art
01 — The Painting
An oil painting is completed. Its surface — the texture, colour, and form of the paint — becomes the raw material for the next stage.
02 — The Photograph
The camera explores the surface at close range, finding imagined landscapes hidden in the paint.
03 — The Print
Selected images become limited edition giclées — signed, numbered, issued with a Certificate of Authenticity.
04 — New Creation
The photograph may inspire a new painting. That painting is photographed. The cycle begins again — indefinitely.
Concept 03
AI in Art — Coined by Simon Aitchison — 2026
AiRT™ is not about what artificial intelligence can make on its own. It is about what a human artist can make when AI becomes part of the process — a genuine collaborator rather than a tool used in secret or a shortcut to be concealed.
The name is deliberate. AiRT™ places the AI in the middle of the word Art — not at the beginning, not at the end. The human artist is the author. The AI is the instrument. The work that results belongs to the person who directed it, shaped it, and took responsibility for it.
"AiRT™ is not about what AI can make. It is about what a human artist can make when AI becomes part of the process."
AiRT™ was coined by Simon Aitchison in 2026 as part of the broader conceptual framework documented in his manifesto alongside OIRA™ and Paintscape Photography™.
01 — Transparency
The use of AI in the creative process is named and acknowledged, not hidden. AiRT™ treats transparency as a creative position, not a disclaimer.
02 — Authorship
The human artist remains the author. AI does not replace creative decision-making — it extends and accelerates it. The vision is always human.
03 — Collaboration
AI is engaged as a genuine thinking partner — for developing language, concepts, systems, and documentation — not merely for generating outputs.
04 — Ownership
The framework is named, documented, and owned. AiRT™ is an original concept by Simon Aitchison — not a general description of AI-assisted art.

The Spiral Mark is a golden ratio spiral — a mathematical form found throughout nature in shells, galaxies, plant growth, and wave patterns. It was chosen deliberately. The spiral does not have a beginning or an end. It expands outward from a centre, each revolution informed by the one before it.
The spiral form was chosen for its structural resonance with the OIRA™ framework — a recursive process in which each work informs what comes next. The mark is not decorative. It is a diagram of the process.
The mark appears on all Certificates of Authenticity — for both original paintings and limited edition Paintscape Photography™ prints — and as the navigation logo on simonaitchison.com and paintscapephotography.com. It does not appear on the paintings themselves.
It is the single visual element that ties the entire practice together — across two websites, three conceptual frameworks, and all documentation produced since 2026.
"The spiral has no end. Neither does the work."
